Mind Blown is an original, collectible card game aimed at stimulating curiosity in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths amongst grades 4-7 learners in order to prepare them for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In 2015 we started an action research pilot where we looked at what we could do to prepare young people for the jobs of the future. We found that most of these jobs will be in innovation but South African learners were not performing well in Maths and Science.
We also found found that matric was too late for an intervention and changes need to start at primary school level. Learners were apathetic and educators were overwhelmed with the demands of CAPS. Learners did not seem excited about what they were learning in school and were learning for the sake of learning ie just to pass a test. They had lost their sense of wonder.
After many engagements with learners from a variety of schools – no-fee, township, private and ex Model C – we found that games were a great medium to connect with young people. We could not use mobile games as cell phones were not allowed in schools. But cards were portable, affordable and offered a great way for learners to interact with each other. And thus began an exciting journey where we tested if being curious about a topic would get learners to dive deeper into that topic outside of the classroom. We hoped that this spark of curiosity would ignite a love of learning and discovery.
We have since engaged with over 5000 learners, educators, parents and organisations and hosted Mind Blown tournaments in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The overwhelming feedback is that those who play the game are more sociable and more alert and active in class. We have created a storyline to go with the game and expect this to generate more engagement with the players.
We are planning a national roll-out in 2019 and are working on a mobile version of the game in order to engage with more learners across Africa. We will be training unemployed people and tutors or other interested people to become Mind Blown coaches. They will earn a stipend and a commission. We are very excited about the potential of gamifying learning. The game can be adapted to suit various subjects, grades and languages and is easy to learn and fun to play. We expect that once players rediscover their sense of, “wow” they will be more interested in learning.
We will use the prize money to develop Mind Blown coaches. They will be given training, stipends, marketing kits and sample games to be used in their clubs. We would like to train 20 unemployed youth or interested people eg. tutors, mothers, etcetera to become coaches. They will earn a commission over and above their stipends.
